Move Those Dollars
Move Those Dollars

We've all heard there are two kinds of power: organized money and organized people. But on the same day J.P. Morgan announced a 57% increase in its annual profits, four hundred organized people gathered in the Hart Senate Office Building to tell big banks, "We've got some money too! Hundreds of millions, in fact! And we are moving it!" At the event, sponsored by the community organizing network Metro IAF, the assistant treasurer of Massachusetts vowed to move $243 million out of big banks to protest the outrageous interest rates they charge consumers. A Lutheran bishop and the treasurer the of civil service employees union CSEA also promised to move millions. It was the first time that--thanks to the pressure of organized people--major institutions have committed to moving money out of the valuts of Wall Street loan sharks.
